The LUG has been on a decline for the last year. No advertising, lack of communication before events etc has basically led to a drastic drop in numbers, or people turning up to mid month drinks just to be the only one there.

I don't think this is acceptable, there is a distinct lack of cohesion within the 'committee' and I do think that there is very little commitment any more to the LUG.

I'm calling for a vote of no confidence and a move towards re-elections. Preferably before Christmas. The LUG at the moment is in a limbo and unless we sort it out it will decline further back into the state is was before its renaissance last year.

I propose we discuss this at the next LUG.

It used to be the case that rarely a month would go by without there being some rant or whinge about our wonderous ISP, so I thought I'd take this opportunity to drag up an old chestnut:

Today's Hull Daily Mail Wrote:Hull-based telecoms firm KC is to be allowed to offer packages of services to its customers for the first time.

Industry regulator Ofcom has given the go-ahead for KC to sell packages including broadband, landline and other services similar to those already offered by other communication providers.

BT was allowed to offer so-called bundles in September last year.

Ofcom say the move should give KC customers better value for money.

Under the changes, KC will be required to make the packages available to all residents and businesses in the Hull area.

Prices will also have to be set in a way that will not discourage other communications providers from offering their services to consumers in Hull should they wish to do so.

See tomorrow's Mail for full story.

How wonderful

- I wonder how this will translate to my bill? Does it mean that instead of getting an internet bill for £30 a month and a seperate phone line bill for £12, instead Karoo will just sent me one simple, easy to pay bill for £42 per month???

From the Blog:

It always seems to be questioned as to whether we hold our meetings at the best places, and certainly The Rugby Tavern is good because it’s central, and it serves cheap beer. However when there are a few of us, it can get a bit cramped, and the atmosphere in can sometimes be a bit grim. Additionally, there have been reports that not only does it not have Wi-Fi, which as this is our social meet is not necessarily a big deal as neither do many other city centre pubs, but when people have brought out laptops, bar staff have asked them to ‘put it away’ due computers being some kind of breach of their entertainment licence (?). It seems a bit of a contradiction that a computer group should meet at a venue that is computer unfriendly!!!

These are a few suggestions of where we could meet

The Minerva
Pros: Nice pub, good food, excellent beer, (apparently) has wi-fi
Cons: Bit of a hike from bus-stops, rooms bit be a bit small

William Wilberforce
Pros: Wetherspoons pub, so you know what you’re getting before you walk through the door.
Cons: Wetherspoons pub, so you know what you’re getting before you walk through the door.

The Misson
Pros: Good food & beer, plenty of space, reasonably close to bus-stops
Cons: Can’t think of any – post to the thread if you if you can.

Somewhere Else
Is there somewhere *you* would like to meet? Or perhaps you want to carry on meeting at the Rugby Tavern, if so post to this thread. Preferably make your choice fairly central, so it is just as easy/difficult for everyone to get to.

The next mid-month drinks will be the 3rd Tuesday of the month – in other words 17th August, so this poll will run until Friday 13th.

Where do we meet? You decide!

Thinking about hiring somewhere (would Old Grey Mare put up with us having that corner we had for the launch?) or the Spring Bank Community Centre?

We could all bring down the random computer related junk we all have knocking around somewhere. That useless bit of RAM to you, could be a massive difference to someone else's machine. They might just have that e Machines case you were after in 1998

Along with this we could hand out Linux related info and perhaps have a couple of PCs running different distros. We are contacting Linux Format and O' Reilly to see if they have any promo stuff for us to give out. And any where else you can suggest

I really feel the LUG has been lagging this year. We only have 12 meets a year and I haven't been to half this year!

Are You a Web-Dev? Fancy an X's paid Trip to London

If the answer to both (or possibly even one) is yes then this might be for you...Please note that I found this on the LUG Master mailing list, I can't vouch for any of it, so you might want to check it out before commiting yourself:

Are you a software developer interested in providing a long-term future
for your work? Do you have the time to attend an expenses-paid*, one-day
JISC workshop in London on 7 July 2010? If so, please read on to see how
you could contribute to development recommendations from the JISC.

To register for the workshop, email events@software.ac.uk with the
subject ‘Workshop registration’.

Developers can spend years creating software only to see their efforts
lost because their software’s future wasn’t adequately planned. Planning
for the long-term future not only conserves development effort, it also
helps the funding councils see a better return on their investment. We
intend to find the best methods for achieving a long-term future for
software. We will refine these methods with help from developers, and
publicise them so that the whole development community can benefit.

What are the best methods for providing your software with a future?
That’s where the workshop comes in. It’s only worth recommending methods
that developers will actually use, so we will hold the workshop to meet
with developers, ask them for their advice and gain their opinion on our
ideas. The outcomes of the workshop will shape both the JISC’s guidance
given for software development and the work of the newly formed Software
Sustainability Institute. By attending the workshop, you will have a
chance to guide software policy and ensure that it reflects the needs of
developers.

The workshop will run from 10.30-16.00 on 7 July and will take place at
Brettenham House (London, WC2E 7EN). The day will start with a few short
presentations on sustainable development, but will mainly consist of
small groups of developers discussing their ideas and refining our
ideas. For more information, visit the workshop website
(http://www.software.ac.uk/SustainingSoftware.html) or contact
events@software.ac.uk.

We are a team of software experts from Curtis+Cartwright
(curtiscartwright.co.uk) and the Software Sustainability Institute
(software.ac.uk) who have been funded by the JISC to investigate the
best methods for preserving software. Our study will lead to
recommendations on topics such as how to choose which software to
preserve, which sustainability model to adopt and how to develop for a
long-term future.
Pay what you want for a bundle of 5 indie games. As far as I know they all will run on Linux. Worth it for World of Goo alone.

Although when I tried to pay, paypal insisted on linking my card, which I don't really like the idea of. There are also google checkout and amazon options though.

The 5 games are: World of Goo, Aquaria, Gish, Lugaru and Penumbra

I know some people disapprove of proprietary software full stop, personally I'm all for supporting indie developers. And I'm all for supporting people that will try to get stuff working on Linux.

Theres no drm on any of these titles. Having recently got a new machine, I was looking at getting some new games and its difficult to find one that isn't totally encumbered with all sorts of nasty DRM. The latest genius DRM seems to be connecting to a server (for a non online game). If your internet connection drops at any point, the game stops and you lose your progress. I'm pretty appalled at the way these companies are treating their paying customers. From what I've read its not to stop piracy per se, as much as to make it hard to sell on games.

OggCamp 10

Some of us went to OggCamp last year, and had a really good time. This year it's happening a bit earlier in the year, it's 2 days instead of the 1 day it was last year, and it's being held in Liverpool. If you're interested, then these are the details:

OggCamp is a free software / free culture unconference organised by the presenters of the Ubuntu UK Podcast and Linux Outlaws. This year's OggCamp will take place at The Black-E in Liverpool, UK on the 1st and 2nd of May 2010, 10am - 5pm both days. It'll be 2 full days of Free Software, Free Culture and Free Thinking. We have a large venue booked and expect 200-300 people. If you want a chance to meet others who are passionate about technology and share ideas this is a great chance. We have many top FOSS developers from around the world joining us.

ENTRY TO OGGCAMP IS COMPLETELY FREE!

If you want to get a feel for the event, have a look at our recap of OggCamp 2009.

What is an Barcamp/unconference?

More formal conferences have the usual people speaking every time; an unconference is an opportunity to interact with new and interesting people. There won't be a published list of speakers before the event, everyone generates content on the day. That can include you! The schedule is decided by the attendees and we'll have a voting system for that.

See what others are already proposing - http://ideas.oggcamp.org/talks

What Is An Ogg?
Ogg Vorbis is a completely open, patent-free, professional audio encoding and streaming technology with all the benefits of Open Source. OggCamp is about technology, Open Source and Freedom, but also about music, art, politics, community, creativity and much more. We chose to use the term Ogg because for us it reflects all these things pretty neatly.

Get Involved:
Please add your own ideas for talks and activities to our public wiki – help make the event what you want it to be! It doesn't even have to be about technology strictly, it could be anything. We have about 60 slots available and all are welcome - ideas.oggcamp.org

You can also meet other attendees on IRC in #oggcamp on the Freenode network.

If you have a project you'd like to promote or exhibit about you can email the organising team - oggcamp@ubuntu-uk.org

Come and join us, it's going to be a great weekend. There's travel information and much more at http://oggcamp.org

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Also See The Rathole Roadshow

OggCamp 10 is preceded by a special free culture gig on Friday April 30th 8pm (the night before). It'll be at the Bad Format Social Club in Liverpool. Kick off the weekend in style with live music from David Rovics, Attila The Stockbroker and Rathole Radio host (and Linux Outlaw) Dan Lynch, among other guests. Tickets are £5 in advance and can be bought from the website right now.

Hello,

Over the last few years Bytemark has collected a large amount of
computer hardware that it can no longer put to a profitable use.

We are having a clear out, and will be disposing of everything in the
next few weeks. Ideally we won't actually be paying a waste disposal
company to take it away - it's a waste of kit. So if anyone is
interested then we'll be opening the office up to visitors on the dates
below, to allow them to come and browse and remove any hardware they
would like. The remainder will be junked.

We have a number of 1U/2U cases ,some hot-swap, power supplies,
motherboards (mini-itx,atx,eatx), cpus, hard drives, raid cards - some
pre-built servers, and probably a load of random stuff I can't think of
right now. Please ask if there is something specific and I'll let you
know if we have any.

We will be open for visitors on the following dates:

Tuesday 27th April : 9am - 6.30pm
Wednesday 28th April : 9am - 6.30pm
Thursday 29th April : 9am - 6.30pm

We will also have a charity donations box available. We'd appreciate a
donation, certainly for the large items, this will be donated directly
to Macmillan Cancer Support. Though we're not going to twist your arm
if you don't have anything spare.

Hope to see you soon.
