March Meeting is at Mustard Cafe Bar

Our next meeting is on Tuesday 6th March 2012 at 8pm. We have a new venue this month, and we’ll be meeting at:

Mustard’s Cafe Bar
63 Princes Avenue
Hull HU5 3QX

Mustard has a great menu, we went last week to try out their supper menu, and the pies are excellent. They also have a selection of beers, and most importantly Steve reports that they have internet.

We have a table booked from 8pm, and we’ll look forward to seeing you there!

hulllug.org Blackout 18th Jan 2012 – Help Stop SOPA/PIPA

Stop SOPA/PIPA

Stop SOPA/PIPA

THIS SITE WILL BE DOWN ON 18TH JANUARY 2012

Hull LUG does not normally get involved with politics, but there is an issue that is being discussed in American politics at the moment that has the could affect the we all use and view the internet.

The Stopping Online Piracy Act and The Protect IP Act (SOPA and PIPA) seek to stop illegal downloading and distribution of copywrited material.  Both good and worthy sounding pieces of legislation.  However it appears that the legislation is badly worded, and these Acts are likely to deprive users of the easy use of the internet that we enjoy today.

You may have read that sites such as Wikipedia, Reddit, and Boing Boing are taking part in the blackout, but there are also many thousands or even millions of smaller sites, such as ours that will be blacked out or showing alternative content for the day.

Our Content for SOPA/PIPA

Our Content for SOPA/PIPA

Many say that this is a US National issue, and is of no consequence to others around the world.  This is not the case.  Only this week courts ruled that Richard O’Dwyer, the owner of the TVShack website could be extradited to the US, a country to which he has never been.  If SOPA and PIPA are passed then it is likely that many more UK citizens could face trial in countries where they have never been, and certainly face the risk of a judicial system less rigorous, or at least as fair as that which we enjoy in the UK.

I hope that you understand the reason why, as the host of hulllug.org I am blacking out the site for the day, and I ask you to join me in our stand against SOPA and PIPA

Dave

LUG Trip to the UK Computing Museum

BBC Love

It’s been suggested that we have a LUG trip to the UK Computing museum next year. Would you be interested in going? (if not why not?)

What’s the most that you would you be prepared to pay?

Would you go if we could only do it during the week? (The museum is only normally open Tues, Weds & Thurs).

If we were able to go on a weekend, and it’s quite a distance (just the other side of Cambridge), would you like to make a weekend of it and stay over somewhere? (for example in Cambridge)

We really appreciate your input in this sort of thing.  Also if there is anything that you wan to do, or think the rest of the group would be interested in doing please let us know

Hull LUG’s Festive Feast

Party Tux

Party Tux

Just a quick note to thank everyone for coming along to Xanders last night for the December Meet and Festive Feast.  It was another excellent turnout, and judging by the laughter and merriment everyone seemed to have a good time.  There are a few photo’s on Hull LUG’s Google+ and Facebook pages already.

The first Tuesday of January is the 3rd.  The first day after the bank holiday, for many the first day back at work after the Xmas and new Year break, and for pretty much everyone, the day we count the loose change in our pockets, and work out how we can survive till pay day!!!

For theses reasons it was decided that there will be NO HULL LUG MEETING IN JANUARY!!!

Our next meeting therefore will be on Tuesday 7th February 2012.  The venue is yet to be arranged, however unless anyone has any serious objection, I propose another visit to Xanders.  I’ll have a word and see if we can get a big table in the window (where we can get a mobile signal). If anyone has any other suggetions for meeting venues please let me know.

Before then, Lincoln LUG will be having their next meeting on Wednesday 18/01/2012 in the Olde Crowne Inne in Lincoln.  There is likely to be transport down, so if you want to come, and want a lift, or can even offer a lift please let us know.

The mailing list and the website http://hulllug.org will be updated with any new information as it becomes known.

Once again thanks to everyone, not only for coming along last night, but for all your support throughout the year.  I/We hope you all have a wonderful break and come back for a New Year of Linux and FlOSS related fun.

December Meeting and Festive Meal 6/12/11

Xanders Menu

Xanders Menu (double click for full size))

There has been quite a bit of talk over the last couple of months about what we’re going to do to mark the December meeting, and the run up to the festive holiday season.  Bearing in mind we’ve thought about stuff in the past and never ‘quite’ got round to it we decide at the last meeting that although Xanders couldn’t provide us with Wifi, they did have exceptional food and beer at our last visit there in September.

We had a look at their Xmas menu at the last meeting, and a table has been reserved (in the window so we can at least get a mobile signal).  The staff and management at Xanders have asked if we can give them an idea of numbers, so that they can cater for us both in terms of space and service, so it would be much appreciated if you could take a couple of minutes just to let us know if you’ll be coming along this month, and ideally whether or not you’ll be eating (especially if you’ll be opting for the vegetarian or vegan option).
